STURGIS, S.D. (AP) – Law enforcement authorities in Sturgis say the fire that heavily damaged a local home and injured a woman over the weekend is being investigated as arson.
Sturgis Police Chief Geody Vandewater says that the initial investigation shows the Saturday afternoon fire started in multiple points, substantially damaging the two-story house.
Vandewater says the woman who was injured is considered a suspect in the fire. Vandewater says the woman sustained burns on several parts of her body and is at a Rapid City hospital. Authorities have not released her name.
Sturgis Fire Chief Tom Trigg says two firefighters who battled the blaze Saturday had to be treated for heat exhaustion at a hospital.
The house sits across the Meade County courthouse.
