Panhandle Post received the following message earlier today from Alliance native Dan Marquez. We are sharing this message with our readers, in Dan’s own words, as we continue to extend our thoughts and prayers to all who were affected by this tragedy.

I am writing in as a concerned citizen that was born and raised in Alliance Nebraska, and as a continued tax payer for Box Butte County.  I am asking that our local media can shed light on a much needed topic of conversation.  I am asking that the great community of Alliance come together to hold a candle vigil for the slain and wounded victims of the Orlando Night Club Massacre.  Please hear the volume of concern that is echoing from our countryside! We must come together to support the LGBT Nebraskans, the youth of Nebraska, to help ensure their safety!
This weekend the United States was shaken by a violent hate crime that has massacred the LGBT community. As this month is considered Pride month for the LGBT community to celebrate the rights that have been granted to these wonderful people. Due to this terroristic attack, a heart wrenching 50 American lives were lost with over 50 more in critical condition. Though many believe that the LGBT community does not exist in Nebraska, let alone within smaller communities. There is a strong message that needs to be shared, there is PRIDE in the Heartlands of the United States and Nebraska is full of it. I am asking everyone who identifies as being apart of the human race to stand up with our Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender brothers and sisters and be proud. Be proud to reside in Nebraska and be proud of who we ALL are! Today is a time that we must largely reflect on the hatred that is being generated throughout our world and ask ourselves what side of history we want to stand on. The last terror attack the United States has experienced was 9/11. Let us be the hope and promise that through this event can only unify our nation to be the greatest it can be. If you get a chance today, I urge you share in this opportunity to help save a life and help be a voice of reason for those who have been silenced for too long. If anything, I hope we can all take a moment to reflect on this violent wave that has so many emotionally alert. It takes many helping hands and loving hearts to prevail over such domestic hatred. Take a moment and offer tender thoughts and prayers to the victims and families who have endured such dismay. Hold your loved ones close and always remember that love conquers all.
With respect,
Daniel R. Marquez
