Sister Carmelita Telles, 91, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Marian Residence.
Sister Carmelita was born August 17, 1924 at Tularosa, New Mexico to Edward (Eduardo) and Tomasa (Johnson) Telles and was named Erlinda Telles.
In the fall of 1943 she went to Marycrest Convent in Denver, Colorado and entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity on November 16, 1943. She professed her vows on August 16, 1945 and took the name of Sister Mary Carmelita.
In 1945 Sister Carmelita’s ministry took her to St. Francis Mission in St. Francis, SD on the Rosebud Reservation where she was a teacher and worked in housekeeping until 1965. She then worked as a missionary at the Mexico Mission, Cardonal, Hidalgo, Mexico until 1974. While in Mexico she received her diploma of Catechist from the Institute Calequetico, Mexico City in 1969. She then returned to St. Francis, SD until moving to Alliance, NE in 1981 where she worked in Pastoral Ministry for Holy Rosary Parish. Sister Carmelita returned to Denver from 1988 to 1993 at Marycrest Convent until moving back to Alliance in 1993 where she resumed her duties in pastoral ministry until retiring in 2008.
She is survived by her sister, Cecilia (Bob) Currieo of Tucson, AZ, her brother, Marshal Telles of San Diego, CA, her half-brother, Ronald (Patsy) Telles of Alamogordo, NM, and nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, half-brother, Benny Telles, step-brother, James Cannon and step-sister, Burline Cannon.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, May 21 at 10:00 a.m. at Marian Chapel with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Wake services will be Friday, May 20 at 7:00 p.m. at Marian Chapel.
Memorials may be given to Marian Residence.
